IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS IN THE LEARNING OF A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Welcome to this blog in which I intend to share or exchange information on this fascinating part of any language: idiomatic expressions.

We normally learn a foreign language by focusing on this necessary aspects:



But as soon as we go abroad / overseas we may find this type of language:

The interesting part is that native speakers use this type of contractions when they talk in an informal way:


Let's admit it! This interference is what makes the learning of English a little bit complicated, but at the same time, it is interesting to figure it out (entenderlo).

 Eaten bread? No way! It's a piece of cake!

I will learn every single idiomatic expression in English when pigs fly! (LOL=Laughing Out Loud)


Está lloviendo gatos y perros? There is something wrong. It makes no sense in Spanish. Neither the one in Spanish if I try to understand it literally.


Sometimes we need to say this expression to someone that is bothering us:


How about this idiomatic expression when you have to reveal a secret:


Proverbs and popular sayings (refranes) are very particular because they carry a strong meaning and they use figurative language:
So that, that even Yoda gets confused:


This is a challenge for Language teachers, how do you say these idiomatic expressions in English?

 

Or try to translate this expression. "If you stayed, you stayed". Let's ask a native speaker of English if it makes sense to them,


There would be a huge number of Colombian expressions which are very interesting but complicated to translate.
